In 1463, Donatello carved Penitent Magdalene not in marble, but in humble poplar. Timeworn, emaciated, the figure seems less sculpted than flayed by grief. Wood, unlike stone, absorbs; it warps, it cracks, it carries. Into those fibers he pressed sorrow until it breathed — raw, unrelenting, refusing to be exiled from sight.

This was Florence after plague, after loss: a city that understood penitence as survival. Donatello gave grief a body so that mourning could be dignified, not hidden. His Magdalene does not collapse; she endures, haunted yet holy.

To carry this phrase is to inherit that endurance: the knowledge that sorrow, once given form, follows,  and in following, grants weight to the living.
